Chiropractic Myths Busted: Honest Answers to the Questions That Stop Bucks County Patients From Getting Help
Every week in my Morrisville practice, I hear the same hesitations. A parent wonders whether it's safe to bring their child in. A construction worker from Levittown asks if he'll be "stuck" coming forever. A pregnant woman in Newtown wants relief but isn't sure chiropractic is appropriate during pregnancy.
These are fair questions โ and they deserve honest answers, not a sales pitch.
I've been serving Bucks County families for years, and I believe an informed patient is the best patient. So let's go through the most common chiropractic myths one by one, and replace fear with facts.
---
Myth #1: "Chiropractic Care Isn't Safe"
**The Truth:** Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of healthcare available for musculoskeletal conditions.
According to research published in the *Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics*, serious adverse events from chiropractic adjustments are extremely rare โ far rarer than complications from common over-the-counter pain medications or surgical interventions for the same conditions.
The most common side effect after an adjustment? Mild soreness, similar to what you'd feel after starting a new exercise routine. It typically resolves within 24 hours.
Before any treatment begins in my office, I conduct a thorough health history, orthopedic testing, and โ when appropriate โ refer for imaging. Chiropractic care is always tailored to the individual. Conditions that require a different approach are identified and referred out. Your safety is the first priority, full stop.

Myth #2: "Once You Start, You Have to Go Forever"
**The Truth:** You are always in control of your care.
This is probably the myth I hear most often, and I understand where it comes from. Some people have had experiences where they felt pressured into long, expensive treatment plans with no clear endpoint.
That's not how I practice.
When you come to see me, we talk about your goals. Are you here because your back locked up and you just want to get moving again? We work toward that. Are you dealing with chronic neck pain that's been building for years? That may take more time โ and I'll explain exactly why.
Some patients complete a short course of care and are done. Others choose to come in periodically for maintenance, the same way you'd see a dentist for cleanings even when your teeth don't hurt. That's a personal choice, not a requirement.
You will never be pressured in my office. Period.

Myth #3: "Chiropractors Aren't Real Doctors"
**The Truth:** Doctors of Chiropractic complete rigorous, graduate-level education.
A Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) completes a minimum of seven years of higher education, including a four-year doctoral program that covers anatomy, physiology, neurology, radiology, clinical diagnosis, and hands-on technique. Chiropractors are licensed healthcare providers in all 50 states and are trained to diagnose, treat, and โ crucially โ recognize when a patient needs to be referred to another provider.
Are we the same as a medical doctor? No โ and we don't pretend to be. We're specialists in the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system's relationship to it. That's our lane, and we stay in it.
---
Myth #4: "Kids Don't Need Chiropractic Care"
**The Truth:** Children can benefit enormously from gentle chiropractic care โ and it looks nothing like an adult adjustment.
From the moment of birth, the spine can experience stress. Difficult deliveries, learning to walk, carrying heavy backpacks, playing sports, sitting at desks for hours โ childhood is surprisingly hard on a developing spine.
Pediatric chiropractic adjustments use very light pressure โ often no more than the pressure you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato. There's no cracking, no forceful manipulation. Many kids actually enjoy their visits.
Parents in Bucks County bring their children to me for everything from colic and ear infections to sports injuries and posture issues from too much screen time. I always work within a child's comfort level and keep parents fully involved in every step.
---
Myth #5: "Chiropractic Is Only for Back Pain"
**The Truth:** The spine affects the entire body โ and so does chiropractic care.
Yes, back pain and neck pain are the most common reasons people walk through my door. But the spine houses and protects your nervous system, which controls virtually every function in your body.
Patients come to me for:
- **Headaches and migraines** โ Often connected to tension in the cervical spine
- **Sciatica** โ Nerve pain radiating from the lower back into the legs
- **Sports injuries** โ Shoulder, knee, hip, and ankle issues alongside spinal problems
- **Auto accident injuries** โ Whiplash, soft tissue damage, and post-collision stiffness
- **Prenatal discomfort** โ Hip and low back pain during pregnancy
- **Posture correction** โ Especially relevant in the age of remote work and smartphones
If you're not sure whether chiropractic can help your specific issue, call the office. The worst I can tell you is that it's outside my scope โ and then I'll point you in the right direction.

Myth #6: "The Cracking Sound Means Something Broke"
**The Truth:** That sound is just gas releasing from the joint โ it's harmless.
The pop or crack you hear during an adjustment is called a cavitation. It happens when a spinal joint is gently moved through its range of motion and a small gas bubble forms and releases within the synovial fluid of the joint. It's the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles.
It doesn't mean anything broke. It doesn't mean the adjustment "worked" or "didn't work" either โ some adjustments produce no sound at all and are just as effective. The sound is simply a byproduct of joint movement.
---
Myth #7: "Chiropractic Isn't Safe During Pregnancy"
**The Truth:** Prenatal chiropractic care is not only safe โ it's often recommended.
Pregnancy puts enormous stress on the pelvis, low back, and hips. As the body releases the hormone relaxin to loosen ligaments for delivery, joints can shift in ways that cause significant discomfort.
I use special positioning and gentle techniques specifically designed for pregnant patients. The Webster Technique, in particular, focuses on balancing the pelvis and reducing tension in the uterine ligaments. Many OBs and midwives in the Bucks County area actively refer their patients for chiropractic care during pregnancy.
If you're pregnant and in pain, you don't have to just "push through it."
---
Myth #8: "If My Doctor Didn't Mention It, It Probably Doesn't Work"
**The Truth:** Medical doctors and chiropractors approach health from different angles โ both have value.
Medical doctors are trained primarily in pharmacological and surgical interventions. That training doesn't always include a deep focus on conservative musculoskeletal care. That doesn't mean chiropractic doesn't work โ it means it wasn't part of their curriculum.
In fact, the *American College of Physicians* now recommends spinal manipulation as a first-line treatment for acute and chronic low back pain โ before medication. The evidence base for chiropractic care has grown substantially over the past two decades.
More and more, I see medical doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors working together as a team. That's the direction healthcare is moving, and it's the right one.
---
Myth #9: "I'm Too Old for Chiropractic"
**The Truth:** There's no age limit on wanting to move better and hurt less.
Older patients often worry that their bones are too fragile or that adjustments will be too aggressive. These are understandable concerns โ and they're addressed through modified techniques.
For seniors, I use lower-force methods, instrument-assisted adjustments, and gentle mobilization rather than high-velocity manipulation when appropriate. The goal is always the same: reduce pain, improve mobility, and help you maintain independence.
Many of my older patients in Bucks County tell me chiropractic care has helped them stay active, sleep better, and reduce their reliance on pain medication. That's a meaningful outcome at any age.

Ready to See What Chiropractic Can Actually Do for You?
I hope this clears the air. Chiropractic care isn't magic, and it isn't right for every single condition โ but for the millions of people dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, and related issues, it's a safe, evidence-informed, and often highly effective option.
If you've been sitting on the fence because of something you heard, I'd rather you come in, ask your questions face to face, and make an informed decision.
